A breath of fresh air: Ask og Eng’s tranquil apartment at 3 Days of Design

Last week I made one of my own dreams come true and spent four days in Copenhagen. The main focus on my trip was to visit 3 Days of Design — the annual festival focusing on furniture and lifestyle design. I could write a book on the amazing things I saw and experienced there, but one in particular won’t leave my mind.

I was absolutely captivated by an apartment I visited, designed by Ask og Eng. Known for their commitment to sustainable design and minimalist aesthetics, Ask og Eng has created a space that is both serene and invigorating, embodying the essence of contemporary Scandinavian living.

A Calming Retreat

From the moment I stepped into the apartment, I felt a profound sense of calm. The design exudes a feeling of absolute tranquility, as though the air within the space is lighter and clearer. It is a rare feat to create an environment that not only looks beautiful but also feels like a sanctuary. Ask og Eng has accomplished this with an effortless elegance that speaks to their mastery of design.

Sensory Delight

If you know me and my work, you will know that I am always focused on the senses. You can use something as simple as scent and sound to evoke overwhelming emotions in a space, and this apartment nailed this for me. A fresh yet warming aroma that made you feel welcome and comfortable, but with a light and clean feel instantly set the scene. It seemed to enhance the overall sense of well-being within the space, making the experience of being in their apartment not just a visual pleasure but also a holistic one.

Innovative Greenery

Another aspect that I found particularly delightful was the innovative use of organic greenery. Wall-mounted plant holders integrated seamlessly into the design, bringing a touch of nature indoors in a way that felt both fresh and sophisticated. These living installations added a dynamic element to the space, bridging the gap between the interior and the natural world outside.

Bright and Airy Ambiance

The apartment’s bright and airy feel was a testament to Ask og Eng’s skill in utilising natural light and open space. Large windows allowed sunlight to flood the rooms, enhancing the clean lines and neutral palette that are characteristic of their work. The overall effect was one of spaciousness and freedom, a perfect counterbalance to often cluttered and chaotic modern life.

A Lived-In Charm

What truly made this apartment stand out was its lived-in charm. Unlike many design spaces that can feel overly staged and impersonal, this apartment had a warmth and authenticity that made it feel like a real home. Seeing the designers’ children playing within the space added to this sense of liveability, highlighting how design can be both functional and beautiful. Ask og Eng has succeeded in creating a space that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also beautifully human.

My visit to Ask og Eng’s apartment at 3 Days of Design was a highlight of the festival. Their ability to blend tranquillity, sensory delight, and innovative design into a cohesive and liveable space is truly inspiring. This apartment is a testament to the power of thoughtful design to transform everyday living into an art form.

Their ability to embody a brand in space, feeling and design was a true inspiration to me. From the branded macarons to the coat hangers and canvas bags, the items bearing the visual identity helped to subtly remind you that this space was crafted with skill and knowledge by a business. They marketed themselves, reminding people this is a space to sell as well as enjoy, without abandoning their message and style.

For those who wish to explore more of their work, I highly recommend visiting their website and Instagram.
